Putting the 'X' in Se_ Offender: A Symposium
Public concern about sexual violence has led to the passage of laws
designed to monitor and restrict sex offenders living in communities. This
symposium will cover several topics of interest related to working with sex
offender populations including housing and employment options. We will review
the myths and facts upon which sex offender policies are passed. Sex offender
risk, recidivism, victimization, and treatment will be discussed. Research that
has been conducted regarding the effectiveness of registration, notification,
and residence restrictions, and their impact on offenders, stakeholders, and
communities will be explored. Participants will gain a greater understanding of
the implications of such laws for adult sex offenders. Finally, we will get
into a deeper discussion about what is realistic and what is not regarding
working with these populations. Our hope is to shed some light on this topic
and generate some answers.
